Former Port Arthur News sports editor Bob West will be honored during the coin toss at Lamar’s season opener against Kentucky Christian on Sept. 1.

West will be the first honoree in a series called “Legends of the Golden Triangle.” He is being honored for his 50-plus years in sports journalism, 43 of which he spent as the News’ sports editor (1972-2015).

A member for Museum of the Gulf Coast Sports Hall of Fame, West organized 13 PA News Homecoming Roasts between 1988 and 2016 and was twice named Texas Sportswriter of the Year by the Texas High School Coaches Association and twice the winner of the Fred Hartman Excellence in Sportswriting Award by the Texas Press Association.
