For the third time in as many weeks, Lamar has a player who has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week.
Junior quarterback Jordan Hoy was named Southland Offensive Player of the Week Monday morning for his effort in leading the Cardinals (4-4/3-3 SLC) to a seven-point victory at Stephen F. Austin.
Getting his first career start in a Cardinals’ uniform, Hoy guided an offense that recorded nearly 450 yards of total offense, including 369 yards on the ground. On the first play from scrimmage Hoy rushed for 23 yards — the play would serve as a microcosm for the rest of the day. Hoy finished the contest with 21 carries for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed 11 of 16 (.688) passes for 72 yards.
Hoy’s 225-yard performance was the seventh-best single-game performance in program history, and the best single-game performance by a quarterback in LU history.
Hoy averaged better than a first down per carry against the Lumberjacks. He finished the day with a 10.7 yards per carry average. By day’s end, Hoy had registered runs of 23, 44, 19 (twice) and 68 yards. The 68-yard rush was the longest by a Cardinal this season.
Hoy guided the Cardinals to their third straight victory Saturday in Nacogdoches. The Cardinals’ win streak has including a last-second thriller over then-undefeated Incarnate Word and a nationally ranked Sam Houston State squad.
Hoy’s honor comes on the heels of Caleb Abrom and Tyler Slaydon, who were each named Southland Conference Player of the Week (Special Teams) in the two previous weeks.
The Cardinals head to Conway, Ark., Saturday to face No. 19 Central Arkansas. The game against the Bears (5-3, 4-2 Southland) is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. at Estes Stadium.
