BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Third-quarter turnaround keys Indians’ win over Cards

Port Neches-Groves outscored Bridge City 18-7 in the third quarter after trailing 24-21 at halftime, and the Indians took to the short road to take a 54-45 victory Tuesday night.
Three PNG players scored in double figures, led by Drake Rojas’ 15 points. Tracy Smith had 12 and Trent Lee scored 10 in the win.
Grant Boudreaux scored 13 points and Noah McFarland added 11 for Bridge City, which will play in the Central Heights tournament in Nacogdoches.
PNG is going to the Hardin-Jefferson Marathon, which begins Thursday.
Sabine Pass 50, High Island 31
In Sabine Pass, Harold James scored 28 points in three quarters, accounting for more than half the Sharks’ points in a blowout victory over the Cardinals.
Sabine Pass finished with 27 steals. Austin Smith made six of those swipes to go with 10 rebounds and seven points.
Sabine Pass led 25-12 at halftime.
The Sharks will go to High Island next for the Cardinals’ tournament.
GIRLS
PNG 49, Lumberton 37
In Port Neches, the Indians (8-3) controlled the glass against their former District 22-5A foes and picked up a big home victory over the now-4A Raiders.
Mollee Priddy led PNG with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Chelsea Carrillo had 13 points and eight rebounds. Maylin Stampley added 10 points.
Holly Jones had seven rebounds to go with four assists and four steals in the victory. PNG coach Kara Skinner said Jones’ and Priddy’s rebounding efforts gave the Indians “great opportunities.” Skinner was also happy with the pressure defense.
Ivy Le scored 14 points and Audrey Postula had nine to lead the Raiders.
PNG will head to the Great East Texas Shootout in Brownsboro to take on Elysian Fields on Thursday.
Bridge City 38, Deweyville 29
In Deweyville, Hannah Wiegreffe and Madison Fischer each scored 11 points, helping the Cardinals improve to 13-4 on the season.
Aspen Daniels added nine points for Bridge City, which will return to action at West Orange-Stark on Dec. 14.
High Island 44, Sabine Pass 35
In Sabine Pass, the Sharks turned the ball over 50 times, and that was what coach Scott Hagedorn called “the big difference” in a nine-point loss.
Sabine Pass led 15-8 after one quarter, but the game was tied at 21 at halftime.
Yainn Zuniga scored 14 points to lead the Sharks.
