Former Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert has been hired as McNeese State’s head football coach.
Gilbert, 40, will be introduced at a press conference at McNeese’s Doland Fieldhouse at 11 a.m. Friday. He replaces Lance Guidry, who was not retained after guiding the Cowboys to a 21-12 record in three seasons.
Gilbert has been offensive coordinator the past two seasons at South Florida, where he followed head coach Charlie Strong from Austin. The Bulls have gone 17-7 the past two seasons, including a 10-2 mark in 2017. Gilbert’s offense in 2018 averaged 444.2 yards of total offense and 31.5 points per game.
Gilbert was hired from Tulsa for the 2016 season and built the 17th-ranked offense in the nation (second in the Big 12 in rushing). The Angelo State graduate has been an offensive coordinator at Abilene Cooper, San Angelo Lake View and Temple high schools and entered the college ranks at Eastern Illinois, moving on to Bowling Green before heading to Tulsa.
McNeese State last made the NCAA Division I playoffs in 2015, when it won the Southland Conference under Matt Viator.
