FOOTBALL: West Brook reaches state semis after 31-21 win over Cy Creek

Published 8:39 pm Saturday, December 8, 2018

West Brook has won only one state championship in football — the first year of the school’s existence.

Two more wins, and the Bruins will have their first championship since 1982.

Jakobi Holland rushed for 100 yards and La’Ravien Elia threw for two touchdowns Saturday in the Bruins’ 31-21 win over Cypress Creek for the UIL 6A Division II Region III championship at NRG Stadium in Houston. West Brook (12-2) will take on Austin Westlake next weekend in the state semifinal round.

West Brook led 24-0 before Cy Creek (8-6) got on the board with a blocked punt recovered for a touchdown late in the first half. Elia, who went 13 for 27 for 150 yards, threw his second touchdown of the day Thaddaeus Johnson late in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 31-7.

Johnson also had a 46-yard touchdown catch from Simpson in the second quarter.

Julian Brown of Cy Creek threw for 309 yards and two second-half touchdowns that narrowed the gap.

Amarillo Tascosa and Longview will meet in the other state semifinal.
