A Fort Bend Marshall High School football player was identified as the victim of a deadly shooting in Houston on Monday night, a Houston TV station reported.

Marshall coach James Williams confirmed to KPRC-TV that the victim was identified as Drew Conley. He wore No. 3 and was listed as a 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior defensive back.

Marshall (14-0) defeated Port Neches-Groves in the 5A Division II Region III semifinals on Nov. 30 in Baytown and is coming off a late come-from-behind victory over Huntsville for the regional championship. The Buffalos are scheduled to play Calallen (13-1) in the state semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at San Antonio’s Farris Athletic Complex.

According to KPRC, Houston police said that Conley and his uncle were involved in a heated argument Monday night when the uncle shot him in the leg. The shooting was reported at about 11:45 p.m. at River Bluff and Broken Bridge drives.

Another family member took Conley to a Sugar Land hospital, where he died, KPRC reported. The station added whether charges will be filed was not clear.

Just before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Marshall’s Twitter account (@MarshallBuffs) posted “Remember 3.” Nederland was among other football programs replying to the post, writing [two praying hands icons] from Nederland Football.”

This is the furthest Marshall, which is located in Missouri City, has been in the UIL state playoffs since the school opened in 2002. The Buffalos lost in the regional final round to College Station each of the past two years.

The winner of Marshall vs. Calallen will take on Shadow Creek or San Antonio Wagner for the state championship at 7 p.m. Dec. 21 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
