NEDERLAND — The Nederland Independent School District board this week recognized dozens of students’ achievement across multiple extracurricular activities this year.
“We’re proud to recognize all of our student-athletes,” Nederland head football coach and athletic director Monte Barrow said. “They have been successful on the field, in the gym and on the roads they run and in the classroom as well.”
Running back Armani Douglas, defensive back Landon Hiltz, quarterback Blaysin Fernandez, defensive lineman Hunter Sonnier and receiver Blayne Burnett were on hand to celebrate their 10-2 season. The Bulldogs finished the regular season as co-district champions and made it to the second round of the playoffs.
“These are five seniors who represented us well and were very instrumental,” Barrow said. “There’s a lot of things that coaches don’t even know that goes on and they’re taking care of it. They’re sure that their teammates and their brothers were ready to play. Very proud of these guys.”
The board recognized Nederland volleyball coach Allie Crommett, senior Brianna Olsen, junior Hannah Hickey and Junior Karley McGill for their season.
“We ended up third place in our district with a record of 21-20,” Crommett said. “We started out the season a little rocky. We went to a harder tournament and didn’t win there. We started the season 1-10 and ended the season 21-20, but they never questioned what they were doing. I can say a million great things about them.”
Crommett said all five of her seniors made academic all-state, which meant they had to have a 94 average or higher all through high school.
Nederland cross-country coach Tommy Oleksy brought Blake Mortera and freshman Isabella Macha to the meeting.
“I tell them at the beginning of the year, the best thing I can tell them is they have a lot of potential,” Oleksy said. “At the end of the year, the worst thing I can tell them is you had a lot of potential. Both of these kids went above and beyond their expectations that I put on them.”
Oleksy said Macha improved greatly over the season, earning “newcomer of the year.”
“It’s an amazing thing to see someone improve that much,” Oleksy said.
“As far as Blake, he ran every day all summer,” Oleksy said. “Shoes are supposed to be good for 300 miles. After one month of the summer he told me he needed a new pair of shoes. That will tell you about how many miles he put in in one month. He did all of that while working a job.”
Oleksy said Blake applied for a second job when school started.
“He worked at Market Basket bagging groceries and stocking and got another job at Subway. He kept his grades up, won district, won the Nederland meet, won the Bridge City meet, MVP of the season in district and first-team all district. You can’t ask for more from a kid than that.”
Nederland tennis coach Jorge Lopez thanked the board for the new tennis courts, and said that five freshmen will move up to varsity next year, in part, because of the upgraded facilities.
Lopez said this was the first year for Nederland to beat district newcomer Barbers Hill.
“We had a great season,” he said. “We made it to the regional quarterfinals and finished 15th in the state. It’s a great honor to coach these guys.”
