BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: PNG girls rough up Nederland by 60

Port Neches-Groves scored more points in the first quarter than Nederland did the entire game.

Two PNG players outscored the entire Bulldogs team and three reached double figures in Port Neches on Friday night, as the Indians posted a 73-13 victory to move to 3-0 in District 21-5A.

Chelsea Carrillo had a near double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds. Maylin Stampley scored 19 and Mollee Priddy had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win, which moves PNG to 12-6 overall.

PNG led 15-2 through one quarter and built the lead to 36-6 by halftime and 57-7 by the third quarter.

“Great team basketball from all 10 kids,” PNG coach Kara Skinner said. “Played four solid quarters, created turnovers on defense and press. Lots of progress shown.”

Valerie Simoneaux led Nederland (5-12, 0-3) with four points.

PNG will take on LCM at the East Chambers Holiday Classic at 4 p.m. Thursday.

 

Memorial 54, Vidor 46

In Vidor, Julia Sion scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the Titans’ district win.

The Titans (6-7, 2-1 in 21-5A) found balanced scoring and shot 42.9 percent from the floor. Of their 31 rebounds, 15 came on the offensive end.

Dakayla Miller had 10 points and Kaila Jackson added nine for Memorial, which will play next in the Barbers Hill tournament.

 

Bridge City 36, Hamshire-Fannett 31

In Hamshire, a strong first quarter for the Cardinals (15-5, 2-1 in 22-4A) set the tone for a five-point win over the Longhorns.

Bridge City led 16-4 after 8 minutes but was held to three points in the second frame despite leading 19-13 at the break. Madison Fischer had 11 points and Aspen Daniels nine for the Cardinals, who will play in the East Chambers Holiday Classic.

 

BOYS
Memorial 72, Vidor 62

In Port Arthur, four double-digit scorers helped Memorial come away with a 10-point home victory over the Pirates and even its District 21-5A record.

Jaden Conner finished with 19 points to lead the Titans (11-6, 1-1 in 21-5A). Nate Clover scored 18, Amaree Abram had 12 and Kenneth Lofton Jr. netted 11 in the win.

Memorial will host the two-day James Gamble Classic starting Thursday. The Titans’ JV will host Houston Madison at 2:30 p.m., and the Titan varsity will face Houston Kashmere starting at 7 p.m.

 

Bridge City 60, Hamshire-Fannett 40

In Bridge City, Beau Martin’s 15 points led four Cardinals in double figures during a 20-point District 22-4A win.

Austin Richardson scored 11, and Kolten Weeks and Ethan Oceguera each had 10 for the Cardinals, who will host their tournament next Friday and Saturday.

 

Tekoa 112, Community Christian 64

In Orange, double-doubles by Jailan Ardoin, Robert Scott and Lesley Harmanson helped the Cougars (11-1) come away with a 48-point decision over the Lions.

Tekoa set the tone with a 33-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The lead grew to 53-31 by halftime.

Nine Cougars got into the scoring column, led by Ardoin’s 26 points and 12 rebounds. He also had seven assists and three steals.

Scott had 20 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Harmanson tallied 19 points, 13 boards and three steals, Darryl Prevost knocked down 18 points to go with three assists and five boards and Troy Angelle registered 11 points and seven assists.

“All around team efforts on both sides of the floor captivated the win,” Cougars coach Melvin Sostand said. “We scored 33 points at the end of the first quarter and 35 points at the end of the fourth quarter.  That’s hard to match on any level and it shows when our team dials in, they are a force to be reckoned with.”

The Cougars will face Houston St. Pius X at 4 p.m. Thursday in the James Gamble Classic at Memorial High School.
