BEAUMONT — Score 1,000 career points? Check. Collect 500 rebounds? Check. Dish out 500 assists? Check. Pick up 500 steals? Check.

Senior guard Chastadie Barrs scored her 1,000th career point this season at Mississippi State becoming the 16th Cardinal in history to do so. On Dec. 17 early in the second half of the contest against Howard Payne, she recorded her 500th career steal, becoming the fourth player in NCAA history to accomplish that feat.

Barrs entered her senior season with 500 rebounds and 500 assists to her name. With adding 1,000 points and 500 steals, Barrs joined elite company. She became only the second player in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 500 steals in a career.

“It is an honor for Chastadie to join the likes of Ticha Penicheiro in becoming the second player in Division I women’s basketball to accomplish this feat,” stated head coach Robin Harmony. “She has been a four-year player for Lamar and has been a consistent player over her career. She has helped the Lamar women’s basketball team get to where we are at today.”

She joins Ticha Penicheiro of Old Dominion as the only players to do so. Penicheiro was a two time All-American and four-time all-conference player for ODU. Following her days at ODU, she went on to be a four-time WNBA All-Star, three-time All-WNBA selection and won an WNBA Championship in 2005 with the Sacramento Monarchs.

“It is such an honor to join Ticha in accomplishing this feat,” remarked Barrs. “I wouldn’t be here without the help of my coaches and teammates. Without them it wouldn’t be possible. The hard work I have put in has paid off with success on and off the court.”

Along with joining this company, Barrs has recorded six triple-doubles in her career, which is the second most for active NCAA players. Barrs’ first career triple-double came last season, on Nov. 13, 2017 against Louisiana College.

Joining elite company is not new to Barrs. Prior to the start of the season, she was named to the 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, which recognizes the top-20 point guards in the nation. She has been named Southand Defensive Player of the Year three straight years and the only player in league history with three Defensive Player of the Year honors. During her junior season, she set the LU school record with four triple-doubles, and earned First Team All-Southland Conference and First Team SLC All-Academic honors.

The Nancy Lieberman Award watch list will be narrowed down to just 10 players by mid-February.

Barrs and the Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 5 when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference action. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. from the Montagne Center.
