NFL: Texans’ new QB coach has Lamar ties

Carl Smith has earned a reputation of mentoring outstanding quarterbacks in college and the NFL, most recently Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks.

When the Houston Texans announced their coaching additions for the 2019 season earlier this week, they revealed a quarterbacks coach who at one time was offensive coordinator at Lamar.

Smith held the role under Larry Kennan at Lamar from 1979-81, taking over the offensive line as well in his last season there. The highlight of the Cardinals’ 4-6-1 record in 1981 was a season-opening upset of reigning Southwest Conference champion Baylor, 18-17.

Smith, 70, had spent the past eight seasons with the Seahawks. Under his tutelage, Wilson engineered the Seahawks to two straight Super Bowls, winning in the 2013 season over the Denver Broncos.

Now, Smith will get to work with Deshaun Watson in Houston’s offense.

Smith will work under Tim Kelly, who was promoted from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator.
