WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Barrs named player of week for fifth time

FRISCO — For the fifth time this season, Lamar’s women’s basketball player Chastadie Barrs has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week presented by MidSouth Bank, the conference office announced Monday.

Barrs and Nicholls’ Cassidy Barrios both have earned the Southland Player of the Week five times this season. The last time Barrs earned the award was on Monday, Jan. 28.

For the week, Barrs averaged 18.5 points, 8 steals, 7 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game in Lamar’s two victories.

She opened the week by tying her career-high with 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting against Northwestern State. She recorded 10 steals for her ninth double-double of the season. With her 10 steals in the contest, she moved into second place on the NCAA career steals list. She has five games this season with 10 or more steals.

On Saturday, Barrs recorded seven assists, which gave her 657 for her career, setting the Lamar school record of assists in a career. Barrs broke Ramona Jones’ assist record that was set in 1993. She collected six steals in the contest giving her 600 for her career. She is only the second player in NCAA Division I history to record 600 steals in a career. She added 13 points in the contest. With the home win on Saturday, Lamar has won 39 straight games at home.

Barrs and the Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when they host the Cardinals of Incarnate Word at the Montagne Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The contest against UIW is Play 4 Kay-Breast Cancer Awareness game.
