GOLF: Landry shoots 3-over to start Honda Classic

Andrew Landry will have his work cut out Friday if he is to make the cut in the Honda Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach, Florida.

The Port Neches-Groves ex got off to a poor start Thursday and needed a birdie-birdie finish to sign for a three-over par 73. Landry had started his day with back-to-back bogeys, doubled the par-4 sixth and was five over after a bogey at 10.

He notched his first birdie of the day by rolling in a 9-footer on the par-4 11th, but gave that shot back with a bogey at 16. The highlight of the day came when he sank a 20-foot birdie on the par-3 17th, then buried a 30-footer on the par-5 18th.

Jhonattan Vegas owned the first round lead with a 6-under-par 64.

Landry, who missed the cut in his last start two weeks ago at the Genesis Open in Los Angeles, won’t have to wait long to try and make a move up the leaderboard. He tees off at 6:25 a.m. Central on Friday.
