PREP ROUNDUP: Cardinals stay unbeaten after win, tie

Through eight games, Bridge City has not suffered a baseball defeat yet.

Five runs crossed the plate in the top of the first, and that got the Cardinals going in a 9-2 win over Gateway College Prep on Friday in the Cameron Yoe and Rogers tournament on Friday.

Cameron Yadon, Logan Hamm and Sam Carpenter each lined two hits for the Cardinals (6-0-2). Hamm tripled and Gavin Green doubled.

Green struck out two and allowed five hits in 4 2/3 innings for the win.

Later Friday Bridge City scored two runs in the seventh to even the game against Brock, but the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Peyton Havard struck out eight and allowed seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

 

Grapevine 6, PNG 4

In the Crosby tournament, Grapevine scored three runs in the seventh inning to turn back the Indians in a rematch of the 2017 5A state championship game won by PNG.

Khristian Curtis and Reece Mancera went 2 for 3 apiece. Grant Rogers gave up two home runs and five earned runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings for PNG.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Nederland 3, Vidor 1

In Vidor, Meg Sheppard netted a pair of goals and Destyn Miguez also scored as the Bulldogs (17-1-2, 9-0 in 21-5A) remained atop District 21-5A standings.

Nederland will host Port Neches-Groves on Tuesday.

 

PNG 6, Dayton 0

In Dayton, Mia Delgadillo, Emma Zummo, Tori Cuthright, Ariel Muller and Kelsie Comeaux each scored in the Indians’ blanking of the Broncos.

Breeana Riggs, Muller and Cuthright made assists for PNG (13-3-6, 6-2 in 21-5A), which visits Nederland on Tuesday.

“We are starting to really trust each other and move the ball around,” Indians coach Aimee Bates said. “We are by no means happy where we are but are hungry to get better. We are looking forward to playing Nederland Tuesday.”

 

Memorial 1, Barbers Hill 0

In Mont Belvieu, a goal by Guadalupe Contreras makes the difference in Memorial’s 1-0 win over Barbers Hill on Friday.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Nederland 2, Vidor 1

In Nederland, Juan Reyes and Payne Barrow made up both of the Bulldogs’ goals in a win over Vidor.

Nederland improved to 5-2-2 in 21-5A and will visit PNG, a 3-0 loss to Dayton on Tuesday.

Also in 21-5A, Memorial beat Barbers Hill 2-0.

 

SOFTBALL

PNG 2, Crosby 0

In Port Neches, Kasidee Sartin tripled and Cameron Niedenthal doubled as part of the Indians’ eight hits in a close non-district win.

Bayja Newby and Sydnee Adams each went 2 for 3 for PNG (11-4). Sadie Shrestha drove in a run.

Niedenthal struck out five and walked one.

 

Nederland 14, Kelly 0, 5 inn.

In the Liberty/Huffman tournament, a seven-run fifth inning helped Nederland (17-0) post an early shutout of Kelly.

Destini Trahan struck out seven and allowed a hit in five innings, while Nederland’s Bulldogs made 17 hits. Trahan also drove in three runs while batting 3 for 3, and Harlee Brown also went 3 for 3 with two runs scored for the Nederland Bulldogs.

Allysa Collazo drove in four runs. She, Sierra Wiltz, Lexi Eversole, Hannah Grumbles and Tori Morrison each batted in two runs.

Julie Renfro had the only hit for the Kelly Bulldogs, but took the loss in the circle.

 

Tarkington 4, Nederland 2

Earlier in the Liberty/Huffman tournament, Nederland pulled within 3-2 following two runs in the sixth, but the Longhorns added a run in the bottom half and went on to victory.

Nederland committed four errors and was outhit 4-2.

Alyssa Collazo batted 2 for 3, and Lexi Eversole hit a triple for the Bulldogs. Anna Lambert and Callie Banning each lined two hits and Madison Bunfill tripled for the Longhorns.

Dillion Cooper held Nederland to two runs on five hits in a complete-game win. Sierra Wiltz scattered eight hits over six innings but struck out five in the loss.
