SOFTBALL: Lamar splits at Texas A&M Invitational

COLLEGE STATION — The Lamar softball team split its two games on day two of the Texas A&M Invite as they won game one, 4-1, over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before closing out the day with a 10-7 loss to host Texas A&M.
Lamar 4, TAMU-Corpus Christi 1
The Cards got the offense clicking in the top of the first inning. With one out, Savana Mata reached on a bunt single. Shaina Amir followed with a single through the left side putting two runners on for LU. After an out, the runners advanced on a passed ball, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Maddy Myers came up clutch with a single up the middle, which scored two runs for LU putting Lamar ahead 2-0.
Mackenzie Savage made the start for the Cards against the Islanders and she recorded a strike out of the first batter. She got the next hitter to ground out before an Islander was hit by a pitch. Following the hits batter, Savage settled down and got Wendel to pop out to end the inning.
Lamar looked to add to its lead in the top of the third inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Jade Lewis singled putting two runners on. Both runners moved up a base after a throwing error by the Islanders catcher. Myers followed with a walk loading the bases. However, the Cards would leave the bases loaded.
The Cards extended its lead in the top of the fourth inning. Victoria Garivey singled up the middle to get LU going. Kelly Meeuwsen pitch ran for her and stole second base. Meeuwsen moved to third on a sac bunt. Mackenzie Futrell singled to shortstop, which scored Meeuwsen putting LU ahead, 3-0.
A&M-Corpus Christi picked up its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Thomas singled to third, for the first hit of the day for the Islanders. However, the next three hitters would be retired, and she would be left stranded on base.
The Islanders scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning trimming the Cards lead down to 3-1. With a runner on third base, Rivas hit a sacrifice fly, which scored one for the Islanders.
Lamar extended its lead back out to three runs in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Amir was hit by a pitch. Lewis followed with a single. With runners on the corners, Myers and Amir second base and home putting LU ahead, 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lewis, who came in during the bottom of the sixth, and shut the door on the Islanders in the bottom of the frame. She got a pop out, fly out and strike out to end the game. Lewis picked up her second save of the season, while Savage picked up her first win of the season and first win over her career.
Texas A&M 10, Lamar 7
Lamar came out swinging against the Aggies as Shannon Klaus doubled to lead off the game. She moved up to third on a sac bunt. After a hit batter put two on for LU, Lewis hit a sacrifice fly scoring Klaus and putting LU ahead, 1-0. Two batters later, Taylor Murphy singled down the left field line scoring the second run of the inning.
After a scoreless bottom of the first inning, Texas A&M came back and tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. With Fortenberry at bat, she singled up the middle scoring two, which tied the game at 2-2. Lewis settled down and retired the next two hitters.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until the top of the fourth inning. Elizabeth Castillo singled to start the Cards out. She scored on a Klaus single, and on the play, Klaus came into score on a fielding error by the Aggies centerfielder.
The Aggies answered back and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. They scored two runs on three hits and took advantage of two Cards errors in the frame. Texas A&M broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth when Fortenberry picked up two more RBIs with a double to left field that score two.
Texas A&M grew the lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth when they scored four runs on one hit and took advantage of two more Cardinals errors.
After scoring two runs in the fourth, LU’s offense went quiet until the top of the seventh inning. After back to back walks to start the inning, Murphy singled loading the bases. LU added on run on a Garivey ground out. Castillo followed with a single up the middle that scored one putting LU down 10-6. The Red and White were not done as Kimberly Mattox picked up a sacrifice fly in the scoring a third run. LU could not get any closer and came up short as they were defeated by Texas A&M, 10-7.
In the contest, Murphy led the Cards at the plate with three hits. Six different Cardinals picked up at one RBI.
Big Red returns to action on Sunday, March 3 when they close out the Texas A&M Invite by playing Longwood at 10 a.m. at Davis Diamond.
