MONT BELVIEU — Six victories in 11 running events made for a quite a productive evening for Port Arthur speed on Barbers Hill’s track.
Lamont Freeman won two races and the Memorial Titans took home two relay titles, en route to a second straight district team championship at Barbers Hill’s Eagle Stadium on Thursday. Memorial, which won the District 22-5A championship last year, totaled 237 points to win the 21-5A title, outdistancing 2018 21-5A titleholder Barbers Hill by 73 points.
Freeman, a junior, beat his own Golden Triangle-area best time in the 800 meters, running 1 minute, 58.92 seconds. He set a new area best in the 400 with 49.32 seconds.
Titan teammate Allen Santos-Williams earned second in the 400, and teammate Jaylon Guilbeau was second in the 800. Dakota Emerson of Nederland came in third in the 800.
Nederland, which came in third with 96 points, was not without a few shining moments of its own.
The 4×100-meter relay team of Josh Mazyck, Logan Nguyen, Adam Roccaforte and Quin Stafford turned in a winning time of 41.97 seconds, nearly a half-second faster than second-place Memorial. The time broke a 53-year-old school record.
But Memorial was not to be denied victory in the 4×200 (James Ward, Micheal Odoms, Tyrence Augusta and Jatavian Neal) or 4×400 (Freeman, Neal, Gulbeau, Jessie Cornell).
Memorial was strong in Wednesday’s field events earning titles in the long jump (Landin Jackson), shot put (Tre’Vonte Caines) and triple jump (Alex Ned), aiding their team title.
Blake Mortera of Nederland added to his 3,200-meter win Wednesday night with a 1,600-meter win in a time of 4:51.80.
Barbers Hill won the girls team title with 202 points, 84 better than second-place Nederland and 100 points ahead of Memorial.
Claire Broussard of Nederland (13:23.77) and Jaysa Miller of PNG (13.31.31) took the top two spots in Wednesday’s 3,200-meter run. The Bulldogs’ 4×200 team of Hannah Torres, Meg Sheppard, Cheynne Hammonds and Ke’Asia Hall) earned another gold medal.
Jacie Droddy of PNG earned her second and third victories in the district meet with wins in the 100 and 200 meters. The long jump champion was nearly a full second ahead of second-place A’Nyriah Scott.
The 5A area meet will be held next week at Barbers Hill.
