Motiva Enterprises closed the sale Wednesday on two historic downtown Port Arthur buildings — the 1912 Federal Building and 1926 Adams Building — in time for Thursday’s celebration and “reveal” of company plans for a downtown office “campus.”
Angela Goodwin, Motiva spokeswoman, said the company and Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce would host “Imagine … Port Arthur,” a celebration of the sale and what’s to come, starting at 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fifth Street and Austin Drive, where the two buildings are located. The company has also exercised an option on the former site of A.E. Scott Furniture store, held in private hands, which is located across the street from the Federal Building at the same intersection.
Thursday’s celebratory event will take place in a closed street area between the old furniture store site, completed in 1912, and the city of Port Arthur’s health department, the fourth building at the intersection.
Brian Coffman, president and CEO of Motiva Enterprises, will deliver prepared remarks and Pat Avery, president and CEO of the chamber, will emcee the event. Port Arthur Mayor Derrick Freeman will also speak.
Area restaurants will serve refreshments. The public is invited and some 500 people were expected to attend, city officials said.
The “reveal” will include drawings of what the company hopes to develop in the two buildings, which it has formally secured, Goodwin said.
The target date for closing the sale of the Federal Building and the Adams Building was May 15 — Wednesday. Motiva has discussed acquiring other downtown sites in city hands, including the health department and the nearby 10-story Sabine Hotel, built in 1929.
Fencing was erected around the Federal Building and the Adams Building on Wednesday. Construction is expected to commence almost immediately.
Eventually, some 500 office workers were expected to move into the downtown buildings.
City officials said although streets will be closed around the immediate site of the celebration, there should be ample parking available for the public. They said they would clear a parking lot across from City Hall, two blocks away.
