An early morning, one-vehicle crash on Highway 82 claimed the life of the driver, Port Arthur police said.

In an issued statement, police said the driver of the vehicle left the roadway in the 2800 block of MLK about 1:35 a.m.

Police found the vehicle in Alligator Bayou. Two officers entered the waterway to try to rescue the driver; unfortunately, they were unable to remove her from the waterway.

The Port Arthur Fire Department arrived on scene and they were able to recover the driver, who was transported to the Medical Center of South East Texas, where she was pronounced dead after multiple lifesaving efforts.

The victim’s name was being withheld until the next of kin is notified.
