Juan Esparza of Groves paints a basketball player in the colors of the Port Neches Groves Indians on a utility box at the corner of Twin City Highway and Hogaboom Road on Friday.
Each side of the box will feature an athlete from a different sport: basketball, baseball, football and soccer. At the time the photos were taken, baseball and soccer were finished and Esparza hadn’t started on football yet.
Painting is something that Esparza loves. He heard that PNG athletes as a painting subject were a common request, and since his children attend PNG he wanted to paint something that would inspire area students.
Esparza has also painted a mural at Sylvia’s Florist on the side of the building facing the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard. The mural is painted as a postcard that says “Welcome to Groves,” depicting various Groves landmarks like the police and fire stations.
