Two and a half hours after announcing a Port Arthur pedestrian had been killed in a collision with a vehicle, the Port Arthur Police Department updated media members and the community, saying the victim is still alive.

“It should be noted in (a) previous news release the victim had reportedly received fatal injuries,” Sgt. Shawn Perron said. “This was not the case, and (the) victim remains alive and in critical condition.”

PAPD’s initial report came out at approximately 4:13 a.m. Friday, followed by the update at 6:40 a.m.

Police have only identified the victim as a 64-year-old Port Arthur male.

The pedestrian was struck Thursday night, Port Arthur Police said, following a collision in the 1400 block of Jefferson Drive.

Preliminary investigation indicated the man attempted to cross Jefferson Drive from east to west at 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said the victim failed to yield to oncoming traffic, crossed when unsafe and was struck by a sport utility-type vehicle.

The victim was taken to Christus Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth for treatment.

Police said the driver of the vehicle that struck the victim, as well as a witness, stopped, and emergency services were contacted for the injured.

No charges were immediately filed against the SUV driver, and Perron said all parties are cooperating with police and investigators.
