NEDERLAND — Two news cases of COVID-19 were reported Thursday for Nederland residents, according to the Jefferson County Health Department.
Their ages range between 60 and 70.
Both individuals are quarantined at home and are cooperating with local health officials.
There are now three positive COVID-19 cases in Nederland.
Epidemiological investigators and public health staff are performing investigations and surveillance on the patients, and will identify individuals who potentially were associated with their cases.
Those identified to be at possible risk of exposure or infection will be contacted for further case investigation.
The City of Beaumont Public Health Department also reported the second COVID-19 related death of a resident in Beaumont.
The announcement came Thursday afternoon and followed news Wednesday evening that 70-year-old Randy Flatau was the city’s first death.
Those are the only two deaths related to COVID-19 reported in Jefferson County.
The gentleman who died Thursday was between the ages of 80 and 90 years old and had underlying health issues, officials said, adding he had no known travel history.
“This is an important reminder that COVID-19 is a very serious disease,” a Health Department release said. “While 80 percent of individuals who contract COVID-19 will have mild to moderate symptoms and fully recover, they may spread the disease to people who are at high risk.
“The elderly and people with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems are at a much higher risk for developing serious complications from COVID-19. We strongly advise at-risk individuals to minimize contact with others who are ill and practice social distancing.”
