The Port Neches-Groves Indians have a date, time and location to their state quarterfinals showdown with Huntsville.
PNG is the scheduled home team for a 7 p.m. Friday battle at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The Indians defense staved off a late rally to post a 30-27 win over No. 1-ranked Montgomery Lake Creek last week in Region III Class 5A-Div. II semifinal playoff action at C.E. King’s Panther Stadium.
“Pretty is overrated,” coach Jeff Joseph told Port Arthur Newsmedia after the game. “There is only one thing that matters at the end of the day and that’s getting a win and we found a way and that’s what it’s all about.”
Joseph said quarterback Connor Bailey was outstanding in the first half.
“Our receivers, especially Noah Washington, stepped up and made contested catches,” he added. “Shea Adams going across the field is a difference maker for us because he makes plays with the ball. Connor did a great job in the first half. The offensive line was good in pass protection. We had guys that made plays and that’s the biggest part.”
A big playoff game in Houston at the home of an NFL team is nothing new for the Indians.
In fact it was Nov. 25, 2022, when Port Neches-Groves turned the game over to the offensive line and its stout running game, which carried them to a 38-28 win over Brenham in the Region III Class 5A-Division II semifinals at NRG Stadium.
PNG fans are hoping for a repeat this week.
