Governor Greg Abbott has appointed eight student regents to their respective universities, effective June 1, 2024, for terms set to expire on May 31, 2025.
Additionally, the governor appointed the student representative to serve on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, effective June 1, 2024, for a term set to expire on May 31, 2025.
For the Texas Southern University, Taylor Getwood was named regent.
He received an Associate of Arts in Academic Studies from Lamar State College Port Arthur and a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Texas Southern University (TSU).
He is pursuing an Executive Master of Public Administration from TSU.
Getwood was first elected to the Port Arthur Independent School District Board of Trustees three years ago at the age of 18.
Now, as a recently reelected trustee, the 21-year-old is ready to go full throttle as an advocate for students and staff but also holding people accountable, including himself and fellow board members.
As the youngest on the board, Getwood is ready for something different — using social media as a platform and outlet to host meetings, inform and engage the public and start educating the community on what the school board does.
