Lamar State College-Port Arthur has officially named a new head coach to oversee the Seahawks’ softball program.
Brittany Baker, who led the team as interim head coach during the 2023-2024 season, will drop the interim title and take over full-time, the university announced via press release.
“Brittany was a natural choice,” LSCPA Athletic Director Scott Street said. “She has been with us since the 2017 season and during that time, she has proven herself an accomplished and talented coach. I’m very happy with her decision to take on the head coaching duties.”
Baker is a familiar face in the Seahawks’ dugout having served as an assistant at LSCPA for six years. When longtime Head Coach Vance Edwards retired before the 2023-2024 campaign, Baker was tabbed to lead the team in the interim.
“Having spent a year as interim head coach has really given me the confidence to step in now and take the program in a new direction,” Baker said. “This is a new beginning, a fresh start. Last year was a great start in our plans to make Lamar State College Port Arthur a conference contender every year.
“There’s a freedom now to build the team in my vision. Removing the ‘interim’ part of the title is very exciting. There’s a new mindset now, from the coaching staff to the players. This is the start of something we know can be really great.”
Before arriving in Southeast Texas as a graduate assistant for Lamar University, the Ohio native played four years at Division III Bluffton University where she was a two-time Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree.
