Heat advisory affecting Jefferson and Orange counties Thursday

A heat advisory was issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 2:43 p.m. valid for Thursday between noon and 8 p.m.
The NWS states, “Heat index values up to 111 degrees expected.”
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” explains the NWS.

- Seek shelter: Opt for an air-conditioned room to stay comfortable.

- Child and pet safety: Be vigilant about never leaving young children and pets in vehicles without supervision, especially during periods of intense heat, as car interiors can quickly become extremely hot.
- Caution outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- Select the ideal time: Consider rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening if possible.
- Recognize heat-related issues: Familiarize yourself with warning signs and how tp recognize the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Stay cool with clothing: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.

- For outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
- If someone is overwhelmed by the heat, swiftly relocate them to a cool, shaded location.
