Work on the multi-million dollar Woodworth Project is progressing as crews add new pavement to the roadway.
The roadwork is being performed by MK Constructors on Woodworth from Gulfway Drive to Lakeshore Drive as part of the total $13.2 million project.
Bobby Gilchriest with MK Constructors explained the scene earlier this week as crews were working on the street. He said new paving would later be added as well as sidewalks and landscaping to the medians.
Landscaping will include plants that are native to the area as opposed to palm trees that were previously used but didn’t survive hurricanes.
Arceneaux, Wilson, and Cole was hired by the city for the engineering and design portion of the project.
The total design includes rehabbing pavements, widening sidewalks, enhancing lighting, adding additional parking near Lakeshore Drive and adding irrigation as part of landscaping.
Capital Project Engineer John Cannatella said the project is scheduled to be complete by December 2025.
The project started out the rehab of half the roadway, he said. Bids came in very good and the decision was made to rehab the whole roadway, which is why the cost of the project increased.
The project cost includes just over $927,000 for landscaping, $1.09 million for irrigation and approximately $814,000 for electrical.
