Countywide, local elections bring new and returning leaders, 2 runoffs

Jefferson County and local elections on Nov. 5 have brought new and returning leaders to the stage as well as two runoff elections.

Voters in Groves were faced with a mayoral race, city marshal race and two councilmember races on the local level.

Incumbent Mayor Chris Borne beat challenger Michael Boudreaux to retain his seat for a third term.

Borne brought in 64.27% or 3,178 votes while Boudreaux brought in 35.73% or 1,767 votes.

“I am super appreciative of all the people who supported me and the fact they put their trust in me for another two years is heartwarming,” Borne said. “We will get back to work and keep trying to get the city where it needs to be.”

Christopher Robin, who has been serving as the interim city marshal since the retirement of long time lawman Norman Reynolds, earned the seat with 52.10% or 2,916 votes.

His challenger Rudy Guerrero brought in 47.90 % or 2,681 votes.

“The city marshal race was hard-fought, with an incredible amount of dedication and effort put forth on both sides. I am honored to accept the responsibility that the citizens of Groves have entrusted to me, and I am ready to serve this community with integrity and commitment,” Robin said, adding he is immensely grateful for the prayers, encouragement, and hard work from my family, friends, and supporters. Your unwavering belief in me has been my strength throughout this journey.

“Together, we will continue building a safe, connected, and thriving Groves. Thank you for your trust; I am eager and excited to work for each and every one of you,” he said. “I tip my hat to Rudy Guerrero, his family, and his entire campaign team for their hard work and dedication. I look forward to working alongside Rudy and every member of the Groves Police Department as we prioritize the needs and concerns of our citizens.”

Voters will need to head back to the polls next month for a runoff for the Councilmember Ward II and Ward IV seats.

The Ward II race saw incumbent Paul Oliver with 46.88% or 1,946 votes. He will face challenger Brandon Holmes who brought in 29.25% or 1,214 votes.

A third opponent, Tanner Thompson, had 23.87% or 991 votes and will not be on the runoff ballot.

The Ward IV race pitted incumbent Rhonda Dugas against two opponents. Dugas saw 25% or 1,173 votes with the least amount of ballots cast for her.

Rae Shauna Gay brought in 41.37% or 1,941 votes and former councilmember Kyle Hollier saw 33.63% or 1,578 votes.

According to information from the city, a runoff election for the two council seats will be held Dec. 14.

Borne and Robin are scheduled to be sworn into office at the Nov. 18 council meeting.

Countywide, Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens, (Democrat) will keep her seat. She brought in 54.83% or 45,148 votes.

Her challenger Steven Broussard (Republican) garnered 45.17% or 37,199 votes.

In the Jefferson County Tax Assessor-Collector race Kate Carroll (Republican) garnered the most votes with 54.83% or 44,842 ballots cast for her.

Her challenger, Rashawn “Shawn” Webb-Locke (Democrat) saw 45.17% or 36,938 votes.
