Katherine Alethia McBride Howard, 103, of Shreveport, Louisiana was born October 19,1921 in Port Arthur, Texas to Elizabeth and Waverd McBride, Sr. She passed away peacefully at The Glenn, Magnolia House on November 23, 2024.
Her parents, Elizabeth was raised in Jonesboro, Louisiana and Wavered “Mac” in Opelousas, Louisiana.
Katherine had five children. She is survived by her son, Kenneth Howard and wife, Janis of Port Arthur. Aubrey C. Howard and wife Judy of Arlington, and daughter, Tamara Van Slyke, of Portland, Oregon. Katherine has 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She had one surviving sister, Nellie Dill and many nephews and nieces.
Katherine is preceded in death by her husband, Rev./Chaplin Arthur S. Howard, her parents, Liz and Waverd, Sr., sons, Arthur L. Howard and wife, Donna Joan and Rodney P. Howard and wife, Barbara. Katherine is also preceded in death by her sisters, Grace Wilson, Mary Inez Robins, and Dorothy McBride. Her brothers, Waverd, Jr. and William “Buddy” McBride and 1 grandchild, Justin Howard.
Katherine was in public school and graduated from Port Neches High School in 1938. She attended Port Arthur Business College and had several positions as a secretary and assistant bookkeeper. In 1940 she married Arthur “Petey” Howard, her high school sweetheart. At that point in time, Katherine and Petey gave their lives to Ministry. Petey was the Pastor at Memorial Baptist Church in Port Arthur for ten years. After retiring from pastoring, they moved to Houston for Chaplain training. They then moved to Scottsdale, Arizona and he worked for Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. When Petey retired from Scottsdale, they moved back to Port Arthur. Petey went to be with The Lord in 1991.
Katherine owned and managed a nursing facility at her home and did private nursing care. After she retired from nursing, she moved to an apartment at Rose House in Port Arthur and was there for two years. After leaving Rose House, she moved to Shreveport for ten years.
On Saturday, December 7, 2024 we will remember a life well-lived and share cherished memories together. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home in Groves, with a gathering of family and friends from 12:00 PM until service time.
