A rare blizzard brought near record breaking temperatures and snowfall to Southeast Texas this week.
The Beaumont/Port Arthur area registered a morning low of 11 degrees Wednesday just after 5 a.m. making it the second lowest temperature with records going back to 1901.
The all-time record low was 10 degrees set on Feb. 6, 1906, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service Lake Charles.
This week also saw the second highest snowfall with 4.5 recorded Wednesday. This is second only to the 1895 record of 30 inches of snow.
Also noted by the NWS is the fact Florida and Louisiana had more snowpack than South Dakota on Jan. 22.
Locally Southeast Texas residents took time to make snowmen, have snowball fights and more.
Port Arthur Police earlier this week had to clear out upwards of 200 people from the Memorial Stadium parking lot on Jefferson Drive where people congregated to drive their vehicles in the snow.
Chief Tim Duriso asked people not to engage in such activities, as it can be dangerous. He said he knew the participants were excited at the snow and decided to do what they thought was fun. However, police had to shut down the snowy event because it was dangerous.
PAPD is also investigating an incident where a man allegedly used his infant son to remove snow from his car windows.
Duriso said they have identified the individual and are looking at pursuing charges for endangering a child.
