A Port Arthur man that reportedly fired a weapon in a reckless manner striking a child in the legs at a neighboring house bonded out of jail less than 24 hours after his arrest this week.
The incident occurred on New Year’s Eve.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Service arrested Christopher Eugenio Alvarado, 24, in the 2500 block of 28th Street on two warrants Tuesday. Alvarado is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with bond set at $20,000 and deadly conduct-discharge firearm with bond set at $10,000, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He bonded out of jail Wednesday afternoon.
Port Arthur Police Department was called at approximately 11:43 p.m. Dec. 31 to the 800 block of Sabine Avenue regarding a child that had been shot. The 3-year-old boy had been playing in the backyard when he was struck. He was then transported to a local hospital by private vehicle.
Officers found that gunfire had come from a neighboring house in the 800 block of San Jacinto Avenue. Police spoke with the homeowner and occupants of the residence to investigate who discharged the firearm and a male reportedly came forward and made a statement regarding the shooting, according to the probable cause affidavit.
The man was identified as Christopher Alvarado.
The document states Alvarado admitted to shooting his firearm towards the direction of the backyard of the home on Sabine Avenue.
The probable cause affidavit asking for the issuance of a warrant for Alvarado’s arrest was signed Jan. 1.
The case was sent to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and Alvarado was arrested Tuesday, PAPD Chief Tim Duris said.
