A man was rescued Thursday morning after driving his car down a boat ramp and into the water on Pleasure Island.
It is unknown at this time as to why the driver entered the water, according to officials.
The driver was not injured.
Port Arthur Fire Department Acting Chief Robert Havens said the call came in around 11:30 a.m. for the vehicle in the water on North Levee Road in the area adjacent to the seawall.
Witnesses who were fishing said they saw the vehicle driving around then drive down the boat ramp.
Kyle Robichau and a friend were getting ready to go fishing on their day off and saw the incident happen.
Robichau said he tried talking to the man but the man wasn’t responding and the car had started floating away.
The driver rolled his window down and Robichau made a quick decision to swim out to the car while his friend called 911. Luckily the man’s seatbelt was undone and he was able to get him out of the car, he said.
First responders arrived on scene fast and a diver checked to see if there were any passengers; there were not.
