A Vidor woman was indicted on a charge of murder in connection with a fatal drug overdose that occurred in the Jefferson County Correctional Facility in November.
Michelle Lee Cormier, 44, was an inmate at the Jefferson County jail and allegedly provided heroin to another inmate, Shelbi Ervin, 25, Nov. 2.
According to the affidavit for arrest, Ervin snorted heroin multiple times over several days. The inmates believed the last time Ervin snorted the drug was approximately midnight to 12:30 a.m. Nov. 2.
Deputies conducted a K9 search of the dorm and positive alerts were observed at Cormier’s bunk and in the bathroom stall.
Deputies reportedly found a letter at Cormier’s bunk that asked for another “line” wrapped in paper and phone time and commissary were promised in exchange.
X Rays were conducted on the inmates in that specific dorm. Cormier’s x-ray showed an anomaly in the abdomen area, the document read.
Cormier made a statement to deputies saying she brought two baggies of heroin by securing them inside her vagina.
Cormier and Ervin had served time together previously at the Jefferson County jail and Ervin had knowledge Cormier would bring heroin to the jail, the document read.
She allegedly admitted to providing Ervin with heroin to snort four times in the bathroom stall and the last time was at approximately midnight.
After Ervin was found in her bunk, Cormier flushed one of the two baggies of heroin down the dorm toilet and swallowed the other baggie.
Ervin was discovered at approximately 7:15 a.m. Nov. 2. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.
The court document states Ervin died as a result of ingesting and inhaling fentanyl.
