Local girls basketball teams set for playoffs

With the regular season done, several local high school girls basketball teams are now readying for the playoffs beginning this week.

The University Interscholastic League’s basketball playoffs begin this week as the Bi-District rounds will be held on Monday, Feb. 10, and Tuesday, Feb. 11, around the state. Each classifications has two brackets, Division 1 and Division 2, which is based on enrollment size of the teams from each district as well as record.

The Port Arthur Memorial Lady Titans finished in fourth place in District 19-5A and are the second seed in from the district in the Class 5A Division 2 bracket. The Lady Titans will face the Alvin Iowa Colony Lady Pioneers from District 20 at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Deer Park High School. The Lady Titans will be the home team for the contest. Admission is $5 cash only at the door for adults and students. The winner of this game will face the winner of the game between the Rudder Lady Rangers and the Kingwood Park Lady Panthers in the next round.

The No. 11 state-ranked Bridge City Lady Cardinals (31-3) are the district champs of District 18-4A and will be the No. 1 seed from the district in the Class 4A Division 2 portion of the bracket and will take on the Rusk Lady Eagles From District 17-4A. The game will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, at Huntington High School. The winner of this game will move on to the area round and face the winner of the game between the Liberty Lady Panthers and the No. 10 state-ranked Houston Wheatley Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Bears of Little Cypress-Mauriceville (26-8) defeated the Lumberton Lady Raiders this past Friday night in Vidor in a contest to determine playoff positioning. Now the Lady Bears will face the Palestine Lady Wildcats (14-18) in the Bi-District round of the Class 4A Division 1 playoffs. The game will be at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10, at Lufkin Hudson High School. The winner of this match will face the winner of the game between the Huffman-Hargrave Lady Falcons and the Houston Worthing Lady Colts.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats (30-7) finished the season as the second place team in District 22-3A and will face the Pollok Central Lady Bulldogs from District 21 at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at Jasper High School in a Class 3A Division 1 contest. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and students. The Lady Bobcats will be the home team for this game. The winner will face the winner of the game between the No. 13 state-ranked Hitchcock Lady Bulldogs and the Crockett Lady Bulldogs in the area round.

The Area round of the high school playoffs will be held later this week with games scheduled between Thursday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
