Port Arthur Police Department will soon launching license plate recognition cameras placed around the city in an attempt to improve police response and investigations.

These cameras are similar to those already mounted on patrol vehicles use to collect vehicle descriptions, searchable evidence and more in an effort to create a safer city. The system is said to work night and day and have the capability to link with other local, state and national networks.

The funding comes from Project Safe Neighborhoods Grant. Port Arthur joins a growing number of cities with such technology like Houston and Austin.
