Bond set at $1.7M for Port Arthur man in fatal Lake Charles shooting

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana — Bond is set at $1.7 million for a Port Arthur man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred outside a Lake Charles bar Sunday.
Fabian D. Charles, 34, is charged with second degree murder, obstruction of justice and illegal use of a weapon by discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, according to information from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 5 a.m. Sunday to a bar on Common Street in reference to a shooting.
During the initial investigation, deputies learned Charles discharged a firearm in the parking lot following a physical altercation. Javin M. Augustus, 25, Lake Charles, was struck by the gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Several witnesses at the scene were interviewed and Charles was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
Judge Hope Buford set Charles’ bond at $1.7 million.
The investigation is ongoing. CPSO Violent Crimes Detective Matthew Fast is the lead investigator on this case.
An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
