Police in Port Arthur are keeping an eye on businesses that sell guns after the attempted burglary of Academy Sports and Outdoors which drew a large response from law enforcement early Saturday morning.

Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso called the response and apprehension of an adult and two juveniles “well executed” with credit going to all involved law enforcement from the dispatch to officers on site and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began when dispatch received an alarm notification from Academy, 8453 Memorial Blvd. Officers arrived at the scene to see the front glass doors of the store had been shattered.

Store personnel were contacted and provided officers with access to the store’s alarm system cameras, which allowed them to confirm the presence of three suspects inside the building. Upon becoming aware of the officers’ presence, the suspects concealed themselves within the store, according to information from PAPD.

The PAPD SWAT Team was activated, along with K9 units from both PAPD and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Hostage Negotiators and Special Response Team members were also deployed to assist. As Special Response Team and patrol guarded the perimeter of the business, the PAPD SWAT Team entered the store and successfully apprehended the suspects without injury to anyone. 

The three suspects, two juveniles and one adult male, were taken into custody and charged with burglary of a building and felony criminal mischief. The adult male, identified as Kyle Demon Tackno, 19, of Port Arthur was booked into the Jefferson County Jail. The juveniles, ages 14 and 15, were transported to Minnie Rogers Juvenile Justice Center. 

Tackno’s  bonds are set at $20,000.

Duriso believes the juveniles are not from Port Arthur. 

The sports and outdoors store sells a variety of items including guns and ammunition.
