The recent death of a woman who was struck by a vehicle while walking highlights the need for caution in this busy section of roadway.
Deborah Henton, 70, of Groves died after she was struck by a vehicle at approximately 10:15 p.m. Friday in the 5300 block of Gulfway Drive. Port Arthur Police believe she was coming from Beverly Place which is across the road on the Groves side of Gulfway.
The driver of the vehicle stopped and was not impaired, according to police.
First responders performed CPR on Henton but she succumbed to her injuries. Justice of the Peace Joseph Guillory II ordered an autopsy.
PAPD Chief TIm Duriso said police are asking people to slow down and not get distracted by their devices. He also asks citizens to look both ways before crossing the highway and to walk facing traffic if they must walk along the highway. This allows them time to react.
Individuals that walk at night should wear reflective gear such as shoes and light colored clothing.
PAPD is also in communication with the Texas Department of transportation to see if there is something that can be done in this particular area.
In January, Carl Ross Sr. was indicted in connection with accident involving death and collision causing serious bodily injury for the Dec. 31 death of Sergio Torres and injury of Marie Howard.
