ROCK-A-NOOS START 1-1 IN SANTA FE

SANTA FE — The Port Neches-Groves Rock-A-Noos split a pair of matches Thursday at the Santa Fe tournament.

PN-G (14-7) first defeated Angleton to the tune of 25-13, 22-25 and 25-11 and then lost to Owasso, Oklahoma, by scores of 25-13, 23-25 and 25-15.

Emily Tolbert on the day had 32 digs and 15 service points while Courteney Segura had 18 service points and Kaitlyn Boudreaux finished with 13. Libbie LeJeune added 16 digs and Jessica Harper had 12 on the day.

Jade Weatherford had 22 kills in the two matches, Carley Roccaforte had 11, both LeJeune and Laura McCutcheon had nine and Hannah Jones put in eight.

PN-G is off today before returning to the tournament Saturday.

MEMORIAL FRESHMEN SUCCESSFUL IN BEAUMONT

BEAUMONT — The Port Arthur Memorial freshman Black team is now 2-0 on the football season after scoring a 22-8 victory over Beaumont Central on Thursday.

Lazarus May and Herbert Felix were named defensive players of the game for Memorial. Jamie Rodriguez was honored on special teams and Darrell Dorsey and the entire offensive line took the accolade for the offense.

The Memorial freshman White team came up with a 14-8 win in its season opener against Beaumont West Brook’s B-team. Defensive players of the game for the White were Pierre Bynum, Jaylin LaPoint and Aaron Wilson. Jacob Washington and Ray’Shawn Washington took honors for the offense.

Both Memorial teams will take on Houston Lamar on Wednesday.

Also Thursday, Nederland’s junior varsity team beat Dayton 29-0.

CARDINALS ANNOUNCE FALL SOFTBALL SLATE

BEAUMONT — Lamar University released its fall softball schedule Thursday, which for the first time includes three games at its home stadium.

Lamar will begin at the Spring Klein Girls Softball League College Classic on Oct. 3 in Spring and then host Galveston College on Oct. 10. Lamar will visit LSU on Oct. 13 and come back home for games against San Jacinto College (Oct. 24) and Weatherford College (Oct. 25).

Lamar State College-Port Arthur will host LU at 1 p.m. Oct. 31. The Cardinals’ fall slate will conclude Nov. 5 at Louisiana-Lafayette.

MURRAY ERASES 0-2 DEFICIT TO ADVANCE

NEW YORK (AP) — Before they stepped on court, there was nothing to suggest Andy Murray would have any trouble against Adrian Mannarino in the U.S. Open’s second round.

So it certainly came as a surprise when, in Thursday’s opening game, Mannarino broke Murray. About an hour later, Mannarino grabbed the opening set. And 45 minutes after that, the Frenchman took the second set, too.

Despite a stuffy nose and scratchy throat, and generally looking as if he might be ready to wilt on another steamy day at Flushing Meadows — two more mid-match retirements, including by 28th-seeded Jack Sock of the United States, raised the total to 12 in the men’s draw so far — Murray put together his eighth career comeback from a two-set deficit and beat Mannarino 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

Roger Federer had his rhythm from the start, compiling a 46-8 edge in winners while beating Steve Darcis of Belgium 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 at night, before 2014 runner-up Caroline Wozniacki was to meet Petra Cetkovska in the day’s last match.

Sock took the opening two sets against 107th-ranked Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium and was three games away from winning in the third, but his body seized up because of cramps, unable to deal with the heat that topped 90 degrees (32 Celsius). In a scary scene early in the fourth set, Sock froze in place, his legs locked.

There are only two American men remaining of the 16 who were in the draw: No. 13 John Isner and unseeded Donald Young.

UTES RUIN HARBAUGH’S WOLVERINES DEBUT

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s defense picked off Jake Rudock three times, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and the Utes spoiled Jim Harbaugh’s debut as Michigan head coach with a 24-17 victory Thursday.

Rudock completed 27 of 43 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns, but the three interceptions did the Wolverines in. Utah’s Travis Wilson went 24 for 33 for 208 yards, but he had one picked off as well.

West Orange-Stark alumnus Justin Thomas recorded the pick-six in the fourth quarter, only for Rudock to respond with a 10-yard TD pass to Amara Darboh to make it 24-17.

Booker rushed 22 times for 69 yards and a TD.

Also Thursday, South Carolina beat North Carolina 17-13 in Charlotte.
