A 24-year-old woman went from Jefferson County Corrections officer to jail inmate Saturday after being arrested for smuggling drugs into the facility.

Aliea Hemphill went from an officer’s uniform to jail jumpsuit following the arrest. Bond was set at $20,000 and she has since been released.

Sheriff Zena Stephens said authorities received information about someone possibly smuggling a controlled substance into the correctional facility and a sting operation was performed.

Hemphill was searched when she arrived at work and a substance was found on her. The substance was tested at a lab and confirmed to be a controlled substance.

Hemphill had been employed with the Sheriff’s Office for approximately six months.

Stephens said investigators believe the suspect was being paid to pass the drugs to an inmate. The case is under investigation as authorities work to identify the person she was allegedly smuggling the drugs in for.

“We take this crime very seriously. It endangers the people who work here, the inmates and the community,” she said, adding they will “prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.”
