Fundraiser set-up to help Port Arthur teen shooting victim and her family

A Memorial High School student and member of the drill team remains in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital following last week’s ambush style shooting.
Donations are being sought through gofundme.com to help the family of Karmen Nixon, 16, as she works toward recovery.
The account “Justice for Karmen” is seeking donations to help with hospital parking fees, hotel, gas, groceries, etc.
“On behalf of the Swallow/Nixon family we would like to thank everyone for all of your continued prayers as we are all going through this tough time right now,” a statement on the page reads.
Nixon was shot in the early morning hours of Dec. 29 while at Sabina Townhomes in the 4100 block of 39th Street in Port Arthur.
Groves dispatch then received a call at 1:24 a.m. for a female victim of a shooting and responded to the 3800 block of Russell Street in Groves. The area is described as a residential area.
Groves Sergeant Chris Robin said police responded and were given information that the shooting occurred in Port Arthur and passed the information to the Port Arthur Police Department.
Officers at the scene performed life-saving measures until medics could arrive. The teen was taken to a hospital via ambulance.
A call made to Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso Friday morning was not immediately returned.
Duriso said earlier this week that detectives would interview witnesses, adding the victim and family are cooperating with law enforcement.
The police chief confirmed the female was shot multiple times, though he did not provide the number of gunshot wounds.
Video from the scene was released by PAPD to the public that showed that two armed individuals with handguns ambushed a vehicle occupied by several juveniles. The suspects fired at the vehicle several times, seriously injuring one juvenile occupant.
The gunmen were seen fleeing the scene on foot in a northeasterly direction.
PAPD is asking everyone in that area to check security camera footage during the timeframe of 1:15 to 1:35 a.m. for anything suspicious.
