Kids have fun learning fire safety

Dressed in a red firefighters suit complete with a fire chief’s hat Jomar Quiles took a look at a fire engine and firefighters on Monday.

Quiles, 4, wants to be a firefighter when he grows up, according to his mother, Marbelinda Gomez.

“It’s 24/7 for him, he’s obsessed with firefighters,” Gomez said.

The family was one of many who attended the Port Arthur Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Week Fair at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center.

Lindsey Anderson brought along her daughter Kadence Martin, 7, and friend Nathan Brady, 7.

“This is a really good event especially for kids,” Anderson said. “This allows them to see the firefighters and learn about fire prevention and safety and an opportunity to get immunizations.”

Port Arthur Health Department was on hand administering flu shots to children and adults.

Bridge City Fire Department Children’s Fire Safety House was on site in front of the civic center allowing children a chance learn what to do in case of a fire.

Children entered the smoke filled miniature house, crawled on hands and knees and exited to the arms of Port Arthur Firefighter Tyler Barbay.

Andrew Jackson, 7, Seara Lavine, 9, and Skyla Lavine, 11, enjoyed the quick safety course.

“I learned if there’s smoke you get on the floor,” Seara Lavine said.

Jackson said he learned to ‘stop, drop and roll’ and to crawl on the floor during a fire.

Dominque Jones brought along her children, Robert Johnson, 6, Raven Jones, 2, and Holly Oville, 1. She said her children were excited to attend the event and see the fire trucks.
