The case involving the shooting of a 16-year-old girl Dec. 29 has been submitted to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, and police expect to make arrests soon.

Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso said the case was submitted late last week and involved two suspects.

One of the suspects is a male in his early 20s from Port Arthur, Duriso said.

The case involves a 16-year-old Memorial High School student who was shot eight times, according to family members, in the early morning hours while at Sabina Townhomes in the 4100 block of 39th Street in Port Arthur.

Suspects were seen fleeing the scene on foot in a northeasterly direction.

The vehicle the victim was in was driven to the 3800 block of Russell Street in Groves and emergency services were rendered.

The family of the injured teen has anxiously awaited news of an arrest or arrests in the case.

Duriso explained why the case took months to get to this point, saying detectives had multiple people interview and a lot of evidence to collect.

“We had to convince some people to cooperate,” he said. “We had to conduct some search warrants. We had to analyze records, and it was all done while investigating other crimes.”

Duriso said he and two detectives were at the door of the victim the next day and walking the neighborhood and have been working on it since the shooting occurred.

Duriso said there are other recent shootings that will be presented to the grand jury soon.
