A Juneteenth Softball tournament and Juneteenth Showdown boxing event are on the roster for June 15 and 16.
While competitive, the 6th Annual softball tournament is going to have a family reunion vibe, organizer Joseph Smith said.
The event brings together classes from Port Arthur’s former three high schools, Lincoln, Jefferson and Stephen F. Austin.
Smith said interested parties wanting to play should get with their class president then “come out and have fun.”
Port Arthur native and NFL player Elandon Roberts is going to throw out the mid-day pitch on June 15.
The two-day tournament begins at 9 a.m. June 15 at Lucian Adams Park, 3400 S. Sgt. Lucian Adams Drive.
Sunday’s fun begins at 1 p.m.
In addition, an awards ceremony honors Woman of the Year Krystal Seymoure and Man of the Year Don Holloway.
Jacoby Edwards is going to sing the National Anthem.
For more information, call Joseph Smith at 409-351 7427 or Ash Garner at 832-560-7048.
The Juneteenth Showdown In Port Town III, Texas vs. Louisiana boxing event is planned June 15 and 16 at the Carl Parker Multipurpose Center, 1800 Lakeshore drive.
Weigh-ins are from 8 to 10 a.m., and the first bout starts at 1 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for 18 and up and $10 for 6 to 17, Lamar students with valid ID. 5 and under is free entry. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Calvin Sheppard Jr. with Lion Hearted Gym said the event features boys, girls, men and women boxers from Port Arthur and the surrounding area.
More than 30 gyms across Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi are taking part in the show, and there are at least 30 bouts planned per day.
The fundraising event is critical because youth are heading to the 2024 National Junior Olympics and Summer Festival in Wichita, Kansas.
