LAMAR VB DROPS  CARDINAL SHOWDOWN

SAN ANTONIO — The road woes continued for the Lamar volleyball team Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals fell 3-1 (21-25, 28-26, 22-25, 18-25) to Incarnate Word’s version of the Cardinals at the McDermott Center in Southland Conference action.

Lamar fell to 12-7 on the season and 2-3 in Southland Conference play. Away from McDonald Gym, where the LU is a perfect this year, the Cardinals are 4-7, but on the opponent’s floor they are 1-5. UIW ran its record to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Incarnate Word had a dynamic day offensively, hitting for a .302 percentage and 62 kills, which was one short of the highest count against LU all season (Rice).  Four UIW Cardinals had 10 or more kills on the day, led by Autumn Lockley at 20. Shaina Garza had 13 and Angelique Vidaurri and Bryaunea Hall had 11 apiece.

Both Chelsea Grant and Autumn Taylor had 15 kills to lead Lamar. Courtney Moore had 11. LU’s best hitting set was the second, the lone game it won.

UNT FIRES McCARNEY AFTER 66-7 DEFEAT

DENTON (AP) — North Texas fired coach Dan McCarney on Saturday after the winless Mean Green lost their homecoming game 66-7 to Portland State of the FCS.

McCarney was 22-32 in four-plus seasons with North Texas, including a victory in the Heart of Dallas Bowl against UNLV after the 2013 season. After that 9-4 season, the Mean Green slipped to 4-8 last year. North Texas (0-5) hit bottom on Saturday at home against Portland State.

Athletic director Rick Villareal announced the move in a news release about an hour after the game.

“This is a really tough decision, but after a complete evaluation of the University of North Texas football program we have decided to make a change at head coach,” Villareal said in a statement.

McCarney was head coach at Iowa State for 12 seasons, leading the Cyclones to five bowl appearances. He was let go after the 2006 season and spent three seasons as an assistant for Urban Meyer at Florida from 2008-10.

“The people here at North Texas are great, we couldn’t be have been embraced or supported any better during my time here,” McCarney said in a statement.

PERRYTON JUNIOR IN COMA AFTER GAME

AMARILLO (AP) — A Texas high school football player is in a medically induced coma after he suffered a blow to the head during a game in the Panhandle.

Perryton High School junior Chris Leanos was being treated Saturday at an Amarillo hospital after collapsing on the field Thursday night at Bushland High, west of Amarillo.

The Amarillo Globe-News reports Leanos walked off the field on his own power but collapsed again on the sideline.

He underwent surgery Friday for a head injury.

Both schools are working to collect donations for the Leanos family to offset medical expenses.

BANK OF AMERICA 500 PUSHED TO TODAY

CONCORD, N.C. — Because of steady rain in greater Charlotte, the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway has been postponed to this afternoon.

The race will go green at 11:30 a.m. Central today. NBC Sports Network will broadcast the 334-lap race.

The Bank of America 500 begins the three-race Contender Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Twelve drives remain in contention for the championship.

Matt Kenseth will be on the pole for today’s race, with Kyle Busch lining up with him on the front row. Both compete for Joe Gibbs racing.

Following the Charlotte race are events at Kansas and Talladega.
