Bechtel donated auto mechanic tools and virtual reality welding equipment to Sabine Pass Independent School District in their ongoing effort to support the growth of its workforce training programs. 

Along with the donation of the tools Bechtel had various representatives of the company there to speak to the students to inspire them to learn a trade and prepare them for the workforce.

Walker Kimball, Bechtel Port Arthur LNG Senior Project Manager spoke to the students at length about the importance of the hands-on learning experiences that come with having a neighbor like Bechtel.

 “It’s critically important, I think rounding out education with how to use tools and how to build things, and all through your life, how that will be another foundational school, another foundational skill like the math of reading because things need to be fixed, things need to be done on an hourly basis to keep everything moving,” said Kimball. 

The School District received several mechanics carts each accompanied by a set of tools for various projects.  A virtual reality welding device was also donated to enable a safe and efficient way to learn the skill. Bechtel hopes that this donation inspires students to pursue and excel in the industries in the Port Arthur area.  

The event was also attended by the Sabine Pass ISD Superintendent Kristi Heid and Mayor of Port Arthur Thurman Bartie.

“You all are being blessed by having an opportunity to learn all this industrial stuff,” said Mayor Bartie speaking to the group of High School Students. “Be thankful for this opportunity, for your future.” 

As of November 2024, Bechtel has donated more than $71,000 in tools and equipment to the Sabine Pass and Port Arthur area.

“Our commitment to education and workforce development is vital to building a strong future for the Port Arthur community by enabling the next generation to meaningfully participate and take ownership in that development,” said Kimball.
