CHARLES UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles underwent successful surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Tuesday, it wan announced on his website.

Charles, who is out for the season, injured the knee Oct. 11 during a game against the Chicago Bears. The Port Arthur Memorial graduate and former Texas Longhorn tried to make a cut to his left on a carry when his knee seemed to give out without Charles making contact.

Charles had 364 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 71 carries through five games this season.

Dr. James Andrews performed the operation on Charles as well as one on his left knee four years ago, according to Alex Sims of jamaalcharles25.com.

LAMAR VOLLEYBALL SWEPT AT HOME

BEAUMONT — Both Chelsea Grant and Cortney Moore had kills in the double-digits Thursday night, but Northwestern State had a potent attack from several places that led the Demons to take down the Lamar Cardinals 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) in Southland Conference action at McDonald Gym.

Both Moore and Grant had plus-.300 hitting percentages, Moore at .393 and Grant at .381. Lamar fell to 13-9 on the season and 3-5 in league play while NSU improved to 6-18 overall and 4-7 in Southland action.

Northwestern State had both of its middle blockers, Glynna Johnson and Amanda Kunz, at nine kills apiece, and Lauren Agan led the way with 10.  Kunz had a .450 hitting percentage and no errors, while Johnson had a .333 mark and Agan a .267 percentage.

SEAHAWKS FINALLY FINISH ON ROAD

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Russell Wilson threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett late in the first half, Marshawn Lynch added a 1-yard score, and Seattle beat San Francisco 20-3 on Thursday night for its fourth straight win between the NFC West rivals.

Wilson completed 10 of his first 12 passes and finished with 235 yards passing and Lynch ran for 122 yards after vomiting on the sideline in the first half. Seattle won its first road game in four tries, avoiding another fourth-quarter collapse this season.

DODGERS, MATTINGLY PART WAYS

LOS ANGELES — Don Mattingly has stepped down as Los Angeles Dodgers manager.

He and the organization mutually agreed to part ways, one week after the Dodgers were eliminated 3-2 by the New York Mets in Game 5 of the National League Division Series. The Mets have advanced to the World Series.

Mattingly, 54, a former New York Yankees star, went 446-363 in five years leading the Dodgers and won three NL West titles. But the Dodgers have not been to the World Series since winning it last in 1988.

FARRELL’S CANCER

IN REMISSION

BOSTON — The Red Sox announced Thursday that manager John Farrell’s cancer, which forced him to take a medical leave for the remainder of the season in August, is now in remission.

Farrell was diagnosed with Stage 1 lymphoma on Aug. 14. The team said he received his results from post-treatment testing Wednesday at Massachusetts General Hospital.
