PORT NECHES – A section of Merriman Street is closed due to a gas leak possibly caused due to the freeze Wednesday morning.
The area that is closed is between Hebert Woods and New Street.
The leak was discovered around 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Port Neches Fire Chief Eloy Vega said when crews arrived on scene they noticed pressure coming out of the road. The visible leak is presumed to be a gas main that ruptured due to the weather causing the pressurized gas to leak.
“The good thing about a gas leak like this is that it will go into the atmosphere as opposed to a closed-in area where a spark could create a large explosion,” Vega said.
Texas Gas Service and emergency crews are on scene.
Vega said there is no immediate danger to the public.
