The Port Arthur Independent School District Board of Trustees will discuss separating the head football coach position and athletic director title, both of which are currently held by Brian Morgan, who is entering his eighth season with the program this fall.

The board will discuss the move at the district’s April 24 meeting.

“We are discussing the pros and cons of having a separate athletic director,” School Board President Kenneth Lofton, Sr. said. “We are a big 5A school. Most big 5A schools are going to that now. This will allow Coach Morgan to focus more on football. We are just going to discuss.”

Lofton said the move is not, yet, official.

“We have to discuss it and put it out for the community to discuss,” he said.

Morgan, who has two years left on his contract with PAISD, has amassed a 58-21 record during his time with the Titans since 2018. His teams have had at least a share of three district titles. Memorial finished last season with an 8-4 record, making the playoffs for the seventh time in as many seasons. The Titans season ended after a second-round loss to Angleton in a 36-29 contest. Memorial has won three playoff games in that span.

The Titans basketball team made a deep push this season, making it to the fourth round of the 5A playoffs.

Morgan declined to comment on the potential reduction of title.
