Port Arthur ISD and Port Arthur Public Library are teaming up to host their 2nd annual STEM night at the Library May 15 to celebrate science, technology, engineering and math.

“It was such a success, we’re planning on making it bigger every year we do this,” said Carolyn Thibodeaux, librarian of the Port Arthur Public Library.

The event enters its 2nd year after the success of its first year, where it received 100 students. An announcement was made during the April 21 city council meeting. The program will feature various activities such as a construction zone and an innovation center for children to participate in, along with various volunteers already working in STEM fields.

Lamar University will also be present to teach kids about physics and the design work that goes into the engineering design process.

“Our future depends on (STEM),” said Annie Carter, Member of the Texans Alliance for Minorities in Engineering Advisory Board. “Education is our passport to the future, it’s our passport to innovation, and we must make sure our students are prepared for those types of careers.”

The hope is to encourage students to pursue high-paying careers in STEM by making sure they are not intimidated by Science and Math, said Carter.

The event will be split into three two-hour sessions to allow more students to experience all the event has to offer.

Registration closes April 30, spaces are limited to 300 attendees. Attendees can register online through the library’s Facebook page and the city’s website.

The Library is located at 4615 9th Ave. in Port Arthur.
