Representatives from a Kansas City-based development company will be in Port Arthur Tuesday to discuss the possibility of purchasing the old Sabine Hotel.

James Mooney and Daniel Sailler, principals of MRE Capital, will detail their plans to the city at the 5:30 p.m. City Council meeting.

In a telephone conversation Monday, Sailler said his company is exploring options.

Port Arthur, he said, came to their attention after Texas introduced State historic tax credits.

“Everything we do is tax market credit-based,” he said.

The real estate development company is also looking at other downtown buildings of historical significance such as the World Trade Building.

Also scheduled to speak before city council is Bradford Coleman regarding the Port Arthur Junior Bees Football Team and the Port Arthur Honey Bees Dance Team.

Port Arthur Economic Development Corporation Director Floyd Batiste will make a presentation about an employment-training program, and Port Arthur Police Officer Mike Hebert will talk about the Blue Santa Program.

In other matters, council will consider amending the contract between the city and Ergonomics Transportation Solutions Inc., of Houston. The company is providing engineering designs for a traffic signal at Ninth Avenue and Lake Arthur Drive. If approved, cost of the contract would be increased by $8,790 to a total of $48,429.

The city’s Economic Development Corporation is ready to solicit proposals for the installation of a projection screen on the east wall of the EDC’s new building at 501 Procter Street. Council is expected to consider a resolution allowing the EDC to solicit proposals with the project cost not to exceed $50,000.

Council will also consider purchasing 12 new Chevrolet Tahoes for the police department for a total cost of $561,628. The funding is in the city’s Equipment replacement fund.

Port Arthur environmentalist Hilton Kelley is planning to renovate property at 600 Austin Ave., and will request a resolution approving an operation downtown grant in the amount of $78,875 to renovate the building.
