SOCCER ROUNDUP: Penalty kick at end costs Memorial boys

LUFKIN — The Port Arthur Memorial Titans played what coach Clint Hoverson called the team’s best match of the season Thursday.

The Titans lost 3-2 to a very talented College Park team in the Lufkin tournament.

The two teams were tied 2-2 and with 6 seconds left the Titans committed a foul in the box. College Park netted a penalty kick with no time left on the clock.

Ricardo Monreal scored Memorial’s first goal off an assist from Miguel Rangel to pull within 2-1 with 30 minutes left in the match. Rangel scored off a rebound a minute later to tie the score at 2-2.

Memorial outshot College Park 11-5 and got eight saves from Arturo Villarreal.

Memorial takes on Lufkin Hudson at 6 tonight.

PN-G SHUTS OUT SHOWCASE HOST

BRENHAM — The Port Neches-Groves Indians started the Brenham Showcase off with a 1-0 shutout over the home team Brenham Cubs.

PN-G got the game-winning goal from Koby Jones near the 20-minute mark in the first half.

Keeper Bryce Meche and the Indians defense did the rest from that point on. Meche notched his 50th career shutout and is now 11 away from the Texas state record.

PN-G plays against Katy and Santa Fe today.
